Tea tree and heartleaf for congested skin
These are the two botanicals Korean brands reach for when skin is breaking out. Tea tree is the antibacterial one, effective on active blemishes but drying if overused. Heartleaf — Houttuynia cordata — is the calming one, better suited to skin that is inflamed and oily rather than actively infected. Most good formulas use one as the lead and the other as support.
Which one you need
Active blemishes. Tea tree, in a targeted product rather than an all-over one. It works, and it dries skin out if you treat it as a moisturizer.
Redness with oil. Heartleaf. It calms visible heat and regulates sebum without the tightness tea tree can leave behind.
Ongoing congestion. Pair either with a BHA to clear the pore, and centella to keep the skin calm while you do it.
Oily but sensitive. Heartleaf is the safer starting point. Add tea tree only where you need it.
