Retinol or Retinal? How Korean Formulas Changed the Answer

by Vionine 17 Aug 2026

The same destination, one step apart

Both retinol and retinal convert to retinoic acid once they are in the skin, that is the form your cells actually respond to. Retinol takes two conversion steps to get there. Retinal takes one. At the same concentration, retinal works faster, and it is also more likely to give you a week of redness while your skin adjusts.

That is the whole trade-off, and it is worth understanding before you buy. Faster results and a harder start, or slower results and an easier ride.

What Korean labs changed

Western retinoid formulas historically went for potency: high percentages, minimal buffering, and an expectation that you would tough out the adjustment period. Korean formulators took a different route. Encapsulation slows the release so the active reaches skin gradually rather than all at once. Centella, panthenol and ceramides sit in the same formula to calm what the retinoid stirs up.

The result is retinoid products people can actually stay on. That matters more than strength, because a retinoid only works if you use it consistently for months. The 0.1% formula you apply three nights a week beats the 1% you abandoned in February.

How to start

Two or three nights a week, on dry skin, after cleansing. Moisturizer on top, not because it blocks the active, but because it makes the adjustment period tolerable. Give it four weeks at that frequency before you increase anything.

Mild flaking in the first fortnight is normal. Persistent stinging, tightness or redness that does not settle is not, that is a barrier asking you to slow down. Stop for a week, run barrier repair products only, then restart at half the frequency.

If your skin cannot tolerate a retinoid at all, peptides are the honest alternative. Slower, less evidenced for fine lines, but no adjustment period and no sun sensitivity. Many people run peptides year-round and add a retinoid only in winter.

What not to layer

Not vitamin C in the same routine, at least while you are starting out. Vitamin C in the morning under sunscreen, retinoid at night, that split is standard for a reason. Acids belong on separate evenings entirely. Stacking a retinoid with an exfoliant is the most common route to a damaged barrier we see.

What does layer well: PDRN, peptides, hyaluronic acid and ceramides. These support the repair the retinoid is driving instead of competing with it.

The non-negotiable part

Retinoids increase sun sensitivity. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection is not an optional extra alongside them, without it, you are undoing the work every afternoon. UV is responsible for the majority of visible ageing, and no active outruns daily exposure.

Where to start

New to retinoids: an encapsulated retinol at low strength, three nights a week. Already tolerant: retinal, and expect a short second adjustment. Reactive skin: a retinoid buffered with cica, or peptides instead. The full range is in our retinol and retinal collection.
